Yes — Nomzy is completely free to download and use. There are no ads, no in-app purchases, and no subscription fees.
Nomzy is an iPhone app, available exclusively on iOS. It requires iOS 15 or later. An Android version is not currently planned.
Nomzy uses AI vision to identify restaurants from photos. Point your camera at a restaurant sign, a menu, or import a screenshot from your camera roll. The AI identifies the restaurant name and automatically searches for it in Google Places — saving the full listing with address, rating, hours, and photos. Your photos are analysed and never uploaded to our servers.
Create a shared list and invite friends via a link. Anyone with the link can join as a viewer or editor (you control roles). Editors can add restaurants, leave notes, and vote. When everyone's ready, tap "Decide for us" to let Nomzy make the final call based on votes and preferences.
The Nomzy Share Extension lets you save restaurants directly from other apps without switching to Nomzy. When you're browsing in Safari, Apple Maps, Yelp, or Instagram and spot somewhere you want to try, just tap the share icon and choose Nomzy. The restaurant is saved instantly.
No. Nomzy only accesses your location while you're using the app — specifically to show nearby restaurants and calculate walking distance. We never track your location in the background, and your location data is never stored or shared with third parties.
An account is required to use Nomzy, so your stash can sync securely across your devices. You can sign up in seconds with Apple Sign-In, Google, or your email address.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete Account inside the app. This permanently removes all your personal data from our servers within 30 days, in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
Nomzy collects only what's necessary to provide the service: your account information (name, email), your restaurant lists, and device information for push notifications. We do not sell your data to third parties. See our full Privacy Policy below for details.

We believe privacy is a right, not a feature. Here's exactly what we do — and don't — do with your data.

1. Who we are

Nomzy ("we", "us", "our") is a mobile application developed and operated by Steven Johnsonfor iOS devices. Our Firebase project is hosted in the United States. If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at privacy@nomzy.io.

2. What information we collect

Account information

  • Name and email address (provided when you sign up with email, Apple, or Google)
  • Profile photo URL (if provided by your Apple or Google account)
  • A unique user ID assigned by Firebase Authentication

App content

  • Restaurant lists you create, including restaurant names, addresses, ratings, and notes
  • Shared list memberships and voting data
  • Visited and favourited status for restaurants

Device & usage information

  • Push notification token (to send you notifications, only with your permission)
  • Crash reports and error logs (anonymised, for app stability)

Information we do NOT collect

  • Your location history — location is accessed only in the foreground, never stored
  • Photos or camera images — these are analysed on-device and never uploaded
  • Your browsing history or data from other apps
  • Payment information — Nomzy is free and processes no payments

3. How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and maintain your Nomzy account
  • Sync your restaurant lists across your devices
  • Enable shared list features (invitations, voting, collaboration)
  • Send push notifications about list activity (only with your explicit permission)
  • Diagnose and fix technical problems with the app
  • Comply with our legal obligations

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond providing the Nomzy service.

4. How we store and protect your data

Your data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore database and Firebase Authentication), hosted in the United States. Firebase is certified under SOC 1/2/3 and ISO 27001. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest.

Your restaurant lists are also stored locally on your device using SQLite, so the app works offline. This local data is protected by iOS device encryption and is not accessible to other apps.

5. Third-party services

Nomzy integrates with the following third-party services:

  • Google Places API — used to search for and retrieve restaurant information. Your search queries are sent to Google. Google's Privacy Policy applies: policies.google.com/privacy
  • Firebase Authentication (Google) — handles sign-in securely. Google's Terms apply.
  • Apple Sign In — if you choose this option, Apple's Privacy Policy applies.
  • Google Sign In — if you choose this option, Google's Privacy Policy applies.

We do not share your personal data with any other third parties, and we do not sell your data under any circumstances.

6. Location data

Nomzy requests access to your device location only while the app is in use ("When in Use" permission). Location is used solely to show nearby restaurants in your stash and calculate walking distances. Your location is never stored on our servers and never shared with third parties. You can revoke location permission at any time in iPhone Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Nomzy.

7. Camera and photos

The Nomzy scan feature uses your device camera and/or photo library to identify restaurants. Image data is processed using AI vision capabilities. Photos are analysed on-device and are never uploaded to Nomzy's servers. You can revoke camera and photo library permissions at any time in iPhone Settings.

8. Push notifications

Nomzy may send push notifications to inform you of activity on shared lists (e.g., a friend added a restaurant or voted). Push notifications require your explicit permission, which iOS will ask for separately. You can manage or disable notifications at any time in iPhone Settings → Notifications → Nomzy. If you disable notifications, we delete your push token from our servers.

9. Data retention and deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account (Settings → Account → Delete Account in the app), all of your personal data — including your restaurant lists, account information, and push token — is permanently deleted from our servers within 30 days.

Some anonymised aggregate data (e.g., crash reports) may be retained for up to 90 days for diagnostic purposes.

10. Children's privacy

Nomzy is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at privacy@nomzy.io and we will delete it promptly.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Object to or restrict certain processing of your data
  • Data portability — receive a copy of your data in a machine-readable format

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at privacy@nomzy.io. We will respond within 30 days.

12. International transfers

Your data is stored in the United States via Google Firebase. If you are located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, your data is transferred to the US under Google's data processing terms, which include appropriate safeguards (Standard Contractual Clauses).

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, via an in-app notice. Your continued use of Nomzy after any change constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
